Theatre department drops its pants
Chadron State College’s Theatre Department opens its 2013-14 season with Steve Martin’s farce “The Underpants”
“The Underpants” is an adaptation, by Steve Martin, of the 1910 German farce “Die Hose” by Carl Sternheim. The panties in question, worn by newlywed Louise Maske, fall during a parade to honor the German monarch. Hilarity ensues when gentlemen callers come to woo the now-famous lady, egged on by her nosy neighbor, Gertrude. Soon, the three suitors discover one another. Add in Louise’s dictator of a husband, Theo, and this play turns into a madhouse of scandalous proportions. The show features seven of CSC’s talented actors, some of which are new to the stage. “The Underpants” will play Thurs. Oct. 3rd through Sun. Oct. 6th. Evening shows at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Doug Valade, 21, junior of Poquoson, Virginia
Character: Theo Maske
biggest challenge: Everything. Mostly, though, really getting in touch with my character.
This has been one of the hardest [characters] I’ve played. He may be a simple character, but he has all these complex ideas.
Favorite scene: The scene where I am manhandling Cohen. I like to do that.
What the audience will like best:
The humor, it’s an all-out funny show.
Ashley Daniels, 21, senior of Sheridan, Wyo.
Character: Louise Maske
Biggest challenge:
Louise is very innocent and naive, and it’s overcoming that obstacle of being a child.
What the audience will like best:
I think they will like how, although this is not a modern show, you can relate to it a hundred percent.
Special character prep work:
I really had to step back and take my own personal experiences and not use them. I have been in relationships and Louise hasn’t.
Wacy Gallegos, 19, sophomore of Ainsworth
Character: Cohen
Biggest challenge: Understanding my obstacles. I’m this hypochondriac, so it’s just realizing that I have this obstacle.
Favorite scene: I like the scene where Versati and I argue.
What the audience will like best: The sexual innuendos of this show is the best aspect.
Special character prep work: Just realizing my obstacles. It’s like, “I sneezed, therefore I must have cancer,” type of thing.
Nathan Wojciechowski, 20, sophomore of Minatare
Character: Versati
Biggest challenge: The biggest challenge is trying, with every motion you make and word you say, to paint a picture that everyone can see.
Favorite scene: When I pursue Louise and tell her my feelings.
What the audience will like best: There’s a lot of sexual innuendos.
Special character prep work: I tried to make all of the sexual innuendos stick, so the audience will get them.
