Despite muddy conditions, cross country teams finish in top 20
Chadron State’s men and women cross country team traveled to Fayetteville, Ark., Saturday to compete in the 2013 Chile Pepper Cross Country Festival.
The women, with a time of 1:39:58.90 and 296 points, snatched the 11 spot. The men took 15 with a time of 2:18:37.70 and 426 points.
Head Coach Ryan Baily talked about the course.
“Conditions were epic,” he said.
There were 4-8 inch wide puddles of mud, along with 1-1 ½ foot wide puddles of standing water. He said the runners did well considering the conditions. If the course was dry, the times would have been better by about 45 seconds to a whole minute, Baily said.
Assistant Track and Field Coach Brian Medigovich could attest to this.
“The day before, when it was dry,” he said, “would have been better.”
He said the conditions affected some runners more than others. Medigovich stated the mud started the runners slowly and it is hard to come back from a slow start, although some of the runners were on target.
