After Saturday’s snow delay, the Eagles beat RMAC rival Adams State University, Alamosa, Colo., 31-0, Sunday at Elliott Field, notching their first shutout since 2008.

Team captain and quarterback, Jonn McLain, junior of Chadron, said the team came together for a short meeting Saturday in preparation of the game Sunday.

McLain said he didn’t think the snow delay affected the team.

The Eagles started the game on the right foot, scoring on their first drive when McLain hit wide receiver Nathan Ross, senior of San Diego, on a 48-yard touchdown pass.

At the end of the first quarter, the Eagles led 10-0 after Randy Wentz, freshman of Scottsbluff, connected on a 28-yard field goal.

In the second quarter, inside receiver Chapman Ham, senior of Rapid City, S.D., scored on  a 5-yard pass from McLain.

Inside receiver Cody Roes, senior of Chadron, also scored in the second quarter after catching a pass from McLain, who narrowly avoided a sack. After securing the catch, Roes fumbled, but recovered the ball in the end zone, making the score 24-0.

The final scoring play of the game came in the third quarter, when senior tailback Glen Clinton of Cody, Wyo., who rushed for 116 yards, breaking the 100-yard barrier for the fifth straight game, scored on a 3-yard run. The point after gave the Eagles their 31-0 win, and boosted their RMAC record to 3-0, and their overall to 4-1.

But the offense wasn’t the only show in town. Led by linebackers Dylan Furrier, sophomore of Tucson, Ariz., and Shea Koch, senior of Custer, S.D., Sunday’s shutout proved the Eagles’ defense also came to play.

Furrier led the team with 15 tackles, and he forced and recovered a fumble after sacking Adams State’s quarterback. Koch, an inside linebacker, added 13 tackles.

Despite the team’s first shutout in five years, McLain said he’s not quite satisfied with the team’s performance.

“We have not played a complete game yet,” he said. “We get prepared for Pueblo (Colorado State University-Pueblo) by having a good week of practice and watching film, just like every week.”

At 5-0 on the season, CSU-Pueblo is ranked first in the RMAC, a notch above second-ranked  CSC.

Nationally, the ThunderWolves are ranked fifth in the D2Football.com Top 25 Poll and the American Football Coaches Association Division II Coaches’ Poll. CSC remains 17th in the D2Football.com poll and 19th in the AFCA poll.

Kickoff for the Eagles vs. ThunderWolves is  noon Saturday at Elliott Field.
