Dance team brings a new step to campus

Chadron State College has an extra pep in its step, an Eagle Dance team pep that is. Miranda Obershulte, sophomore of Grand Island and Miranda Miles, senior of Gering with the help of Randy Rhine, president and Aaron Prestwich, senior director of student affairs, have implemented a new dance team on campus. Miles, a dancer of 14 years and Obershulte a dancer of 16 years both feel that the dance team will provide a different type of entertainment for Chadron.

“I wanted to give other girls the option to express their talents,” Miles said.

Although there have been CSC dance teams in the past, Obershulte says she is really focusing on “making this team stick.”

Eagle Dance team tryouts took place at 6 p.m. Sunday, in the dance room in the NPAC. With the attendance of 12 girls, a 30-second dance routine was taught. Along with a four eight-count kick sequence to show skill level, knowledge of specific skills, flexibility and posture. Then the girls had a short interview.

“I looked for a positive personality that could represent the dance team well on and off the floor,” Miles said.

With the conclusion of tryouts the four judges narrowed the team to a final number of eight.

“We plan on trying to perform at halftime of home boys’ and girls’ basketball games starting in Jan.,” Miles said, “we hope to use this year as a building year and want to make the transition into performing for home football games as well next fall.”

Miles and Obershulte said that they are excited to provide a different kind of entertainment at athletic events.

With the financial burden of starting a new organization, the Eagle Dance team has reached out to local businesses and brainstormed fundraising ideas in hopes of further financial support.

“One big goal of mine is to show the crowd how hard we work and how we really want to be involved in the community,” Obershulte said, “you will see some things coming up in the next month.”

The Eagle Dance team will be lead by captains Miles and Obershulte and will be coached by Breon Schroeder, a professor in the HYPER department.
