Fee board by-laws draft issued, CAB preparing for major changes
Senate issued a draft, Monday, for the new Activity Fee Board by-laws. The proposed by-laws were drafted by the AFB sub-committee led by Josh Keating, senator for liberal arts, and were given to senators for review. Discussion is scheduled to take place during next week’s meeting in the Scottsbluff room of the Student Center at 5 p.m.
Jacob Rissler, senate president, encouraged senators to review the draft and talk to their constituents. Rissler also encouraged students to go over the by-laws and let representatives know of any concerns, improvements, or changes they think need to be made.
Nate Jones, senate vice-president, will be meeting with Tim Lordino, Chadron chief of police, this week to discuss off-campus gun storage.
“We are seeing if there is any possibility the city can help, or if it is too much of a liability. This is the first communication we are having with the city,” Jones said.
The executive board is finalizing preparations for its trip to attend the National Center for Student Leadership Conference in New Orleans, Nov. 21-24.
Rissler said that plane tickets have been paid for and a hotel has been booked. Dani Buckley, vice-chair of programming for CAB, was selected from three applicants to attend the conference in lieu of Ashley Swanson, vice-president of finance.
Lane Swedberg, CAB chair, said he is planning for next semester.
“We are making some monumental changes.” Swedberg said, to include round table panels to encourage discussion and participation among representatives, as well as four focus groups at the beginning of meetings.
The focus groups will be a CAB development team, led by Swedberg; programming and scheduling events, led by Buckley; fundraising and finance development, led by Brendan Mead, vice-chair of finance; and media relations and marketing, led by Cheyenne Deering, vice-chair of records.
The coffee shop in the Rita King library is scheduled to open in January, Swedberg said, however, due to conflicts with contracting, that date might be pushed farther into next semester.
A competition to find a name for the coffee shop will be hosted once it is open.
Significant changes to how clubs and student organizations are allocated funding are included in the proposed draft of the Activity Fee Board by-laws.
—The board will contain nine voting members, versus the defunct senate finance committee’s seven voting members. These changes reflect the addition of one member from CAB and one member from the student body at-large.
—Board members will be eligible to serve unlimited terms.
—No more than two members from clubs who have requested funds in excess of $5,000 can serve on the board.
—The Office of Student Activities; an administrative office and non-student, non-club body, will receive a guaranteed $3000 a year budget.
—The Office of Student Activities can request more money from senate after exhausting that budget.
—Senators serving on the AFB by-laws committee will not be eligible to serve on the AFB itself.
