Senate allocates $10K for Big Event, CAB stresses attendance

Senate approved a $10,000 allocation to fund this year’s The Big Event activities. The Big Event is a major community service project organized by the Public Relations Club. The budget was designed to aid 600 volunteers, provide advertisement, food, and t-shirts for the event. Senate President Jacob Rissler, told Senate members the budget was sufficient and designed to provide “wiggle room.”

Senate also approved Director of Career & Academic Planning Services Deena Kennel’s request of $600 for the Career Fair scheduled March 21. The $600 will go toward door prizes such as gift cards and an iPad providing initiative to attend.

Rissler called an executive session and asked all those not on Senate to leave the room. No reason was provided for the session and Rissler said he “would no longer be doing interviews with the Eagle,” when asked for comment.

Senator of Liberal Arts Joshua Keating informed members of building construction progress. Buildings are expected to be completed next fall. Keating also addressed the smoking law on campus. He expressed his interest in creating designated smoking areas 10 feet from campus facility doors.

Those areas would be signified by a paint line indicating the legal smoking area. A major area of concern is the steps outside of the Red Room near Kent Hall. Senator At Large Sean Munger noted the majority of Senate were non-smokers and could not resolve the issue without further discussion. The issue of smoking areas was postponed to a later meeting.

Senator At Large Andrew Johanson resigned from his post on Senate due to a conflict with his class schedule.

The Activity Fee Board is still accepting applicants from the student body at large.  Applications are due Friday, Feb. 7, and can be picked up at the information desk in the student center next to the residence life association office.

Attendance was low Tuesday evening at CAB’s non-mandatory meeting, prompting CAB Chair Lane Swedberg to stress the importance of club attendance.

Swedberg said that a club’s attendance will help determine how money is allocated to clubs in their yearly budget.

Announcements were made for free bowling night on Feb. 15, and free movie night on Feb. 16.

Student Trustee applications are available for any student who has completed at least 60 credit hours. Students interested in applying should contact the Student Government office in the student center for more information.

An on-campus text message system was discussed as a way to notify students of ongoing activities such as late night events, pit events, and open mic nights.

Next weeks meeting will be mandatory, and clubs on CAB are required to have a representative present.
