Rodeo Team raises 5K at annual Black Tie Calf fry

The annual Black Tie Calf Fry fundraiser raised $5,330.17 for the rodeo team through a silent and live auction.
Sponsored by the CSC Rodeo Team, the Calf Fry took place in the Student Center Ballroom, Saturday, featuring a buffet dinner catered by CSC Dining Services, including “calf fries” and roast beef. Following the dinner Coach Dustin Luper honored Con Marshall, CSC information services officer, for his dedication to the rodeo team with the presentation of a belt buckle.
Cowboy poet R.P. Smith of Broken Bow, entertained the crowd with humorous and heartfelt poems. The poems highlighted aspects of a cowboy life from chasing cattle in the night to growing up as a ranch kid.
Paul Tierney, father of CSC rodeo team member and National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association Student Director for the Central Rocky Mountain Region Amy Tierney, senior of Oral, S.D., was the highlighted speaker of the evening. As a successful lifetime roper and former National Finals Rodeo contestant, he offered advice to not only finding success in the rodeo arena, but also in life.
He highlighted three main factors to success, “First is hard work, second is information, and third is humility. It’s simply up to you what you want to accomplish.”

Tierney ended the emotional speech with a few words of wisdom, “Believe in yourself or no one else will,” and, “never use the word don’t.”
Following the speakers was a live auction and the presentation of the silent auction winners. Auction items included a deer horn lamp, a CSC rodeo jacket, a handmade headstall, western jewelry, a certificate for a custom shaped American straw hat, and a few western crafts created by rodeo team members. There was a live band and country-style dance to conclude the evening.
“Due to the weather, we did not do as well as we would have liked, but overall it was really classy and everything ran very smooth,” rodeo team member Rolly Fortune of Interior, S.D., said.
