Softball loses two games at home; travel to Denver next

The warm weather did not give the CSC’s softball players an advantage as they hosted a doubleheader against the University of Sioux Falls this Wednesday.

Chadron State now has a season record of 5-11 and Sioux Falls bumped up to 5-3.

The Cougars scored two runs in the first inning followed by nine more in the third inning. Caroline Johnson, sophomore of Firestone, Colo., singled up the middle for an RBI and sent Taylor Baur, freshman of Rapid City, S.D., home for the only Eagle’s point.

“Their pitcher did a very nice job shutting down our offense for the first game,” Johnson said.

Sioux Falls pitcher Amanda Walters, senior of Sioux Falls, S.D., upheld a no-hitter into the fifth inning.

The second game started off much like the first with the Cougars leading 5-0 in the first inning off four hits and a CSC error.

In the bottom of the first inning Rebecca Wetsch, junior of Erie, Colo., hit a two-run home run.

Sioux Falls followed with a three-run third inning.

In the fourth inning Rebeka Prokaski, freshman of Broomfield, Colo., doubled to centerfield allowing Johnson to score.

Both Caity Pelayo, sophomore from Parker, Colo., and Baur homered to left field for RBIs in the sixth inning.

The final score of the game was 9-7 after Wetsch made it home thanks to Pelayo’s scarified fly to left field.

Although the game ended in the Cougars’ victory some of the Eagles had their first collegiate home runs.

Chadron State will travel, Sunday, March 9 and Monday, March 10, to Regis University, Denver, for another RMAC competition. The teams will play at noon and 2 p.m. Saturday, and at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sunday.

CSC will also travel to Kearney to compete against UNK in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 11.
