Academic probation showing high numbers

There has been talk across the Chadron State campus about the alleged 135 students placed on first time academic probation for the 2013 fall semester.

“The number of students placed on first time probation is similar to past fall semesters,” Frances Gonzalez, coordinator of the Reta King Library Learning Center, said.

Under the CSC Admissions’ Mission Statement, the undergraduate requirements for freshmen and transfer students is stated, “Chadron State College is an Open Admissions College.

No minimum GPA, ACT/SAT or class rank is required for entering freshmen. All freshmen, with proof of graduation from an accredited high school, are automatically accepted. Transfer students in good academic standing are accepted.”

Repeated calls and emails to question Jon Hansen, the interim vice president enrollment management & marketing, about a possible effect in admission and or academic probation policies went unanswered.

For the students on probation there is a Back on Track program to assist them in reaching good academic standing.

“Students are placed with a mentor who meets with them on a weekly basis, helps them develop an academic success plan, and monitors their progress,” Gonzalez said. “Additionally, students are required to attend four academic success seminars.”

Since the Learning Center’s move to the Library Learning Commons it has seen more traffic by students.
