Men and women’s track team on mark for NCAA D-II Championships
Chadron States men and women’s track teams turn in remarkable performances at the Bauer track and field meet at South Dakota School of Mines in Rapid City this past Thursday. Athletes from five schools competed.
Highlights from the meet include CSC’s Karl McFarlane, senior of Montego Bay, Jamaica, running an impressive 14.00 seconds in the high hurdles; and Stashia Reuwsaat, freshman of Black Hawk, S.D., who went 19-3 1/2 in the long jump. Their marks put them in good position to qualify for the NCAA D-II National Championships in May.
The men’s 4×400 relay team consisting of Gavan Archibald, junior of St. Ann, Jamaica; Zerek Jones, sophomore of La Junta, Colo.; Frederick Culp, junior of Mililani, Hawaii; and Phil Rivera, senior of Apple Valley, Calif.; clocked an awe-inspiring time of 3:16.00 which was the second fastest time in school history.
Archibald also won the 400 meter hurdles in 53.56 seconds.
Another winner for the CSC men was senior Brandon Segelke, senior of Sidney. He ran a nice 22.22 seconds in the 200 meters. He also placed second in the 100 meter with a time of 10.86 seconds.
The CSC women dominated the meet winning 10 of the 18 events. Seniors Alyssa Norton, of Rushville, and Cyndi Thomas, of Omaha, threw career bests in the shot put with the mark of 46-7 1/4 and 45-9 3/4 and finishing second and third respectively. These marks are provisional qualifying marks for the upcoming national meet.
Norton also won the hammer with a mark of 164-8 and the discus with a mark of 154-2. These are also provisional qualifiers for the national meet.
Other individual winners for the CSC women were Tory Snyder, freshman of Pierre, S.D., in the 200 meters (26.30); Meagan Nahrwold, junior of Byers, Colo., in the 400 (58.72); Rebecca Volf, junior of Wood River, in the 1500, (4:53.34); Kelsy Wood, freshman of Hemingford, in the 100 hurdles (14.53); Shelby Guy, junior of Akron, Colo., in the 400 hurdles (1:08.31); and Josey Pehringer, sophomore of Cody, Wyo., in the pole vault (10-8 3/4).
The CSC 4×100 relay team which consists of Guy, Snyder, Wood, and Reuwsaat won the event with a time of 49.20, which is sixth all time on the Eagles list.
The track teams traveled to California for their next three invitationals. The first two in Azusa, Calif., and one in Cerritos, Calif. The first meet, the California Invitational Multis, began yesterday and the next, the Bryan Clay Invitational, will be tomorrow. The team will also compete in the Long Beach Invitational, Saturday.
