We aim for a neutral relationship with Student Senate
As with all clubs, we strive for a neutral relationship with Student Senate. However, due to developments such as the New Orleans trip and water bottle stations among others being hammered in articles, subsequently it seems there are impressions that we hold a negative disposition toward them. We attest we have and will continue to have a neutral relationship with Senate.
Firstly, it is important to have a neutral relationship because government can be right under one’s feet – as it is local in this case – while also being over one’s heads. For students to be better aware of what happens in our Student Senate, accounts of gut-wrenching facts in a news article or pronouncing objective disagreement in an opinion article when highly questionable developments occur in Student Senate is necessary.
Secondly, during the Presidential Debate last Thursday, candidate Taylor Strong said, “Our media relations with the newspaper have definitely been on the rocks this entire year.” We strive to simply provide accurate accounts of developments that occur. If there seems to be a rift, let it be known it has never been on our side.
Lastly, candidate Spies said, “I feel if we are to move forward, that we have to take the voice of our students and really put it into our hearts. We can’t just have people sit in Student Senate and say “I” to every single proposal.” We believe that a completely positive relationship between Student Senate and us would contradict this statement. We do not make judgment calls, I’s or the opposite, but we do allow students to do so through our coverage. The relationship is a mess, but it is necessary.
