Don’t ‘Let it Go’ at the expense of love
“Let it go, let it go, can’t hold it back anymore!” This is a common new quote that we as college students like to use to let go of homework, class, and past relationships that we often like to forget about from our home towns.
I’m sure many of you know that this quote is from the now famous movie, “Frozen.” “Frozen” is a movie where a royal family has two daughters; Anna and Elsa. The only problem is, Elsa has magical powers that allow her to create anything related to winter by freezing objects, making it snow, or creating adorable snowmen named Olaf.
Anna and Elsa began to think this power was wonderful for playing, until one morning tragedy struck. Elsa was building snow mounds for Anna to jump on, but when Anna began to run too fast, Elsa accidentally missed and froze Anna. Although her family feared for her life, trolls healed her and also were able to wipe her memory of Elsa’s magical powers to keep her safe.
Elsa was locked away into her room throughout the rest of her childhood and teenage years. “Conceal, don’t feel,” was her famous motto she used to hide her powers to prevent hurting anyone else. But, when their parents were killed out at sea, Elsa was next in line to rule the village. During the coronation ceremony, Elsa and Anna began to argue because Anna thought she had met the love of her life that she had just met that very day named Hans. Elsa aggressively disagreed with it, causing her to be angered. She accidentally revealed her powers to everyone, causing her to panic and run away.
She ran away and began to “let it go,” but by doing so, she froze the entire village and caused a never-ending winter. People began to search for her including her sister.
As Anna was searching, she met a young man named Kristoff who helped her attempt to find Elsa. Again, in the middle of an argument after Anna and Kristoff found her, Elsa inadvertently froze Anna’s heart. It turned out that Kristoff had been raised by the magical trolls who tried to convince Anna and Kristoff that they were in love. The trolls told Anna that she could only be healed by an act of true love.
They hurried back to the village so that Anna could kiss Hans, thinking that was the act of true love to break the spell. When they returned, Hans was in control of the land, and he admitted to Anna that he was just lying about really loving her and he planned on killing her and her sister so that he could have a country to rule.
While all of this was happening, Kristoff realized that he really did love Anna. He began to run back to save her, meanwhile, Hans found Elsa. As he swung his sword to kill her, Anna stepped in, saving her sister and simultaneously freezing into ice. Heartbroken, Elsa cried and hugged her. But, this the act of true love, and Anna began to thaw.
Needless to say, Hans got punched in the face, and Elsa realized that love was all you need to melt away the never-ending winter she started.
With this whole story in mind, we like to think that letting it go would be so easy, but sometimes it’s not the best.
We can set off a never-ending storm somewhere else. All we need is a little love to show everyone. Everyone needs to let some things go, but don’t ever forget that love is more important that the things we think we need to let out.
