Dorm senator petitions available until Sept. 22

Petitions for Senate dorm elections are available for students who are interested, Chief Justice Jon Lordino said.

Petitions can be picked up from Lordino and are due by Sept. 22. The elections will take place Sept. 25 or 26, he said.

The ribbon cutting to thank Cabelas’s, the city of Chadron, and the police department for their help obtaining a gun safe will be Oct. 3. The time has yet to be determined.

The State College Leadership Conference will take place Oct. 24-25 at CSC. The Student Senate and CAB from Peru and Wayne State Colleges are invited to attend. Peru and Wayne will give presentations about their respective Senate and CAB at 9 a.m., Friday, Lordino said.

Vice President Taylor Strong said new photos will be taken for the Senate page on the CSC website and the list of senators will be updated.

President Dillon Spies asked for one student for the Educational Technology Committee, and two students, one from Senate and the other from CAB, to sit on the Scholastic Day Committee.

He also read a letter from Vice President of Enrollment Jon Hansen, which stated that the four clubs -Phi Beta Lambda, Sharp Shooters, ROTARACT, and Natural Sciences- were recognized as clubs by everyone except himself. As such, Hansen stated that he asked Senate to reaffirm the money that the Activity Fee Board allocated to the clubs in April.

Senate took the suggestion, and approved that all of the money AFB allocated to these clubs were returned to them to use for this academic year.

Marci Luton, senator of Kent Hall, said that the Essential Studies Program Committee was discussing decreasing the credits needed for First Year Inquiry classes from six to three. They also discussed counting internship credits for students’ capstone class.

Senator-at-Large Asia Carr resigned from Senate saying she had too busy of a schedule to continue; however, she asked if she could still be a part of the Essential Studies Program Committee, which pertains more to her major.

Senate thanked her for her service with Senate and told her she could continue to be a part of the ESP Committee, as a student did not need to be a part of Senate to be on it.

CAB Chair Kelsey Empfield said that homecoming was Oct. 4. Homecoming royalty nominations are due Sept. 22; voting on royalty nominations will take place Sept. 26-Oct. 2; bedsheets are due at noon, Sept. 26; Oct. 2 will be the coronation of the homecoming king and queen, along with a spirit rally and bon fire; and the homecoming parade, football game, and formal dance at the Star Party will be Oct. 4.

Nominees for homecoming need to get their picture taken from 11 a.m.-noon, Sept. 24 or Sept. 25 in the basement of Crites. Nominees also need to fill out the form online.

Student Activities Coordinator Laure Sinn said Wednesday was Constitution Day, and there was a table set up from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Center, featuring questions for students with refreshments provided.

Family Day is from 8-11 a.m., Saturday. There will be a retirement party for the Nebraska State Champion Blue Spruce Tree, located on the north side of the Dean’s Green, Sinn said.

Pat Beu, senior director of student affairs, talked about alcohol abuse, saying that every weekend this semester he has had to go to the hospital because someone was admitted to the ER for alcohol poisoning.

Beu said he wanted senators to reach out to their peers and tell them about alcohol awareness, and give them the knowledge of alcohol abuse so that students remain healthy and alive.

“I really would like to encourage us to be proactive,” he said.

Stephanie Steele, vice chair of records, and Alex Coon, Blue Key CAB representative, were voted as the CAB homecoming nominees. Three females and three males were nominated.

Empfield, with the help of Sinn, talked about Scholastic Day in the spring. They are in need of a CAB representative to help Sinn put on activities for the high school students on Scholastic Day.

Vice-Chair of Programming Andy Martin said the free bowling night and free movie night went well. There were 130 students who showed up to free bowling night and 268 who showed up to free movie night.

Steele again asked clubs to send updated contact information to her and updated constitutions to Jon Lordino.

The Chadron State College rodeo is this weekend beginning Friday.

Sharp Shooters asked CAB to request $4,500 from Senate to start up their club this year. A roll call vote was required and passed. CAB will request the money from Senate at the next meeting.

The final announcement of the night was that the CSC Birds will perform from 8-11 p.m., tonight at the Bean Broker.
