Volleyball team drops 4 games in Florida

This weekend, the Chadron State volleyball team traveled to St. Petersburg, Florida, for the Eckerd Classic, a tournament hosted by Eckerd College. 

On Friday, the Eagles suffered two close losses to Nova Southeastern University and Florida Institute of Technology. Against Nova, the Eagles lost in three sets, despite posting 127 total attacks. The Eagles could not overcome Nova’s nine team blocks.

Lelalelei Nomura, junior from Pago Pago, American Somoa, led Chadron State with eight kills, two aces, and five digs. Alyssa Bauer, senior of Rapid City, South Dakota, anchored the Eagle’s defense with 14 digs.

Chadron’s late game against Florida Institute of Technology was extremely close, coming down to the final set which FIT won 15-11. The Eagles won the opening set thanks to quality team hitting at .395 percent. After trading sets with FIT for the rest of the match, Chadron lost in the final set, despite excellent defensive play behind Bauer’s 27 digs. Nomura added 23 kills offensively, and Hanna Fleming, senior from Benton, Kansas, added 13 kills of her own.

In Saturday’s games, Chadron State lost against University of Mary three sets to one, as well as losing three of four sets to host Eckerd college. 

Against University of Mary, Nomura led the Eagles offensively with eight kills. Erika Roybal, senior from Denver, also knotted seven kills in the defeat. Chadron ended the tournament against Eckerd College, who went undefeated. Nomura again led the Eagles with 11 kills, and Fleming added seven of her own. Bauer posted a game-high 18 digs to end the tournament.

The Eagles will begin their RMAC competition when they visit Adams State, today, Western State,  Friday, and Colorado Mesa, Saturday.
