Op-Ed: Register to vote, I will buy you lunch
Eagles, we have a problem. Just 14 percent of young Nebraskans voted last midterm election. We can—and we must—do better this November!
Before I go any further, I should probably let you know that I’m not a disinterested party here. I’m running as a Democrat to represent Nebraska in the United States Senate. So you’d just as well know upfront that I have two reasons for wanting you to get registered and vote:
(1) I believe in people-powered democracy, and I know that such a democracy is impossible in a nation where 86 percent of young people are politically disengaged.
(2) I suspect that more of you are inclined to support me than my opponent.
I’m committed to building a brighter future for Nebraska and the U.S. In an age in which big corporations have claimed more and more power over our politics and our economy, I want to reclaim democracy and build an economy that works for everybody. I’ve been doing that in Nebraska by working with everyday people to protect landowner rights, build small businesses, and stand up for what’s right.
My opponent talks about “building the conservative movement.” I don’t care about ideology—I care about results. This race is about the future of Nebraska, and nobody has a greater stake in this race than the state’s young people. So I’m writing today with a challenge: register to vote, and encourage your friends to do the same. When you register, snap a selfie, post it to social media with the hashtag #CSCvoterchallenge, and don’t forget to identify what student group you represent. I’ll buy lunch for the group that claims the most new voters—even if it’s the College Republicans!
The challenge starts now and closes Oct. 17, which is the deadline for new voter registrations in Nebraska.
Let’s do this!
Dave Domina,
U.S. Senate Candidate
