Black squad pins a win at intrasquad scrimmage
The Eagle wrestling team opens its season at 9 a.m., Sunday at the South Dakota State Daktronics Open, Brookings.
The Eagles began their pre-season with an open practice Oct. 18. Six days later came the Black and Cardinal Classic, an annual event that pits the top wrestlers from each weight class against one another
The Black squad overpowered the Cardinal team 26-13. At 141-pounds, Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, logged two pins. The first came in 1 minute 15 seconds against Joshua Miller, redshirt freshman of Bennett, Colorado; the second, an exhibition match, came against Brock Thumm, freshman of Watervliet, Michigan, in :29. McKinney, a North Idaho College, Coeur d’Alene, transfer, posted a 31-11 record last year and won the Spokane Open and the South Oregon Open. Ranked number one in the nation most of last season, he also earned International Wrestling Federation All-American honors.

Johnny Porter, freshman of Bellevue, challenged and beat Reed Burgener, sophomore of Douglas, Wyoming, in the 157-pound bout. Porter finished second at last year’s Wyoming state high school tournament after losing a tiebreaker in the finals.
Members of the Black squad marking wins were Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, 149-pounds; Stuart Hircock, redshirt freshman of Amherst, 184-pounds; and Jake Brown, redshirt freshman of Central City, 165-pounds.
Anderson went 19-12 last season and pinned three of his opponents. He has also been placed on the Preseason All-Conference Team. Hircock pinned his opponent Zach Thompson, freshman of Powell, Wyoming, 184-pounds in 1:06, and Brown pinned Porter at 165-pounds in 2:28.
Winning matches for the Cardinal squad were Ruben Valdez, freshman of Mesa Ridge, Colorado, 125-pounds; Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, 133-pounds; Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds; and Devan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 197-pounds.
Summers wrestled 125-pounds last season, but moved to the 133-pound division to fill a gap left by Dustin Stodola, senior of Clarkson. Stodola used his fifth and final year of eligibility last season. He plans to graduate in May.
