Make a Splash, VOTE
If you met last Friday’s deadline to register as a voter in Chadron, put a reminder on your calendar and vote this Tuesday.
This year is a mid-term election. At stake are Nebraska’s U.S. Senate and House of Representatives seats, as well as the Governor of Nebraska. A recent poll by the Harvard Institute of Politics shows that Millennial voters will have a large swing vote and will prefer a Republican-led congress by a narrow four-point margin.
However, local elections are just as important as the showdown on the national stage.
In recent months, the discussion in Chadron has centered on the proposal to develop and enclose the Chadron Municipal Swimming Pool. Community members petitioned the Chadron City council to allow a half-cent tax initiative to be placed on the ballot.
Chadron State College has been without an indoor pool since the 1961-era pool in Armstrong closed in October 2012. It has since been repurposed into the athletic department’s weight-room, and we have not had an alternative.
Last week, the Chadron Record and KCSR sponsored an election forum in the Student Center, hosting seven candidates in the city council race. The candidates had the opportunity to meet the public and answer questions, and the swimming pool was a major point in the discussion (for more information, see page 3).
Team Chadron, consisting of Mark Werner, and write-in candidates Miles Bannan, and John Coates, seem to be the candidates most committed to advancing progress and are in favor of sensible spending for projects that benefit us all.
The college has had a long-standing relationship with the community of Chadron; students, employees, and faculty provide local businesses and services with our patronage, and because of this relationship, we can all reap the benefits.
Therefore, it would be a wise idea to vote in-favor of the half-cent tax proposal and vote for Team Chadron. We have the perfect opportunity to work toward improving our already-strong ties forged with the city of Chadron and the community, so let’s not waste it. Vote.
