Cross country teams improve at Regionals
The men’s cross country team placed 11th this past weekend at the South Central Regional Championships in Denver. Runners took on a course through Washington Park.
The Eagles improved seven places in the team’s standings from a year ago.
Junior Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, led the Eagles. Koech placed 27th out of 138 runners with a time of 33:29 seconds. He was also the first Eagle to cross the finish line last year placing 39th. Shortly after, junior Alejandro Garcia, of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, placed 37th with a time of 33:50. Following him was freshman Eric Yager, of Hot Springs, South Dakota, finished in 35:15 and placed 74th.
The women’s cross country team placed 12th this year in competition, placing one spot below last year’s finish.
The women were led by Jayme Nunes, junior of Alliance. She finished 43rd out of 127 competitors. She finished with a time of 24:28. Following her was sophomore Nicky Banzhaf, of Chadron, placing 63rd with a time of 25:05. Both improved on last year’s performances, finishing 54th and 115th, respectively.
The Adams State men’s and women’s teams swept the team titles this year.
All but one of the teams advancing to nationals are from the RMAC. The national championships will be held Saturday in Louisville, Kentucky.
