Women’s basketball team wins first game

Victory did not come easy for the CSC women’s basketball team as Colorado Mesa University won with a score of 79-65 in the RMAC opener for both teams Friday.

The Eagles showed a strong performance and distributed the ball well during the first half as 11 players found the basket. Chadron State shot 55 percent from the field and led for much of the first half, but Mesa reversed to lead 35-34 just before halftime.

The Mavericks stepped up in the second half, shooting 31 percent from beyond the arc and 54 percent from the field. Chadron State held tight and scored 11 of 13 from the free-throw line, but Mesa forced them into 11 second-half turnovers.

Leading scorers for Colorado Mesa were guard Erin Reichle, sophomore of Pleasant View, Utah, with a game-high 31 points. Forward Leanndra Gilbert, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and forward Siu Lo’amanu, junior of Taylorsville, Utah, each added 16 points. Gilbert also tallied the first 10 points for the Mavericks.

Point guard Emma Block, junior of Copenhagen, Denmark, and point guard Kayla Mathews, freshman of Adelaide, South Australia, led the Eagles by scoring 10 each. Block also made two 3-pointers and escorted the team with a game-high six rebounds. Guard Havannah Newens, sophomore of Mitchell, also contributed eight points and four rebounds for the Eagles.

The Chadron State College women’s basketball team defeated the Western State Mountaineers 75-62, Saturday night, giving the Eagles their first win of the season.

Block led all scorers with 20 points. Block was followed by Maddie Metzger, sophomore forward of Georgetown, Texas, who had a career high of 14 points.

The Eagles offense came out strong leading 41-28 at the end of the first half. The Eagles went on a 19-5 run in the first half but the lead was cut when the Mountaineers played point for point in the second half. The Mountaineers defense struggled, unable to stop the Eagles offense in the second half.

During the first half the Eagles shot 50 percent from the field, averaging 47.8 percent on the game, while the Mountaineers averaged 37.7 percent. The Eagles shot 31.3 percent for 3-pointers for the game, but the Mountaineers outshined the Eagles shooting a 33.3 percent for 3-pointers on the game.

The Eagles were led defensively by freshman guard, Ruby Luders, of Adelaide, South Australia, and Allegria Chisom, junior guard of Wichita, Kansas. Luders led the team with six rebounds and Chisom chipped in with two blocked shots.

The Mountaineers offense was led by Jade McIntosh, senior forward of Colorado Springs, Colorado, with 15 points, followed by Stephanie Williams, redshirt freshman guard of Cerritos, California, with 11 points.
