Women lose 2 games, 1 in overtime

Two Colorado School of Mines Orediggers scored in double figures to down the Eagles 66-55 Friday in Golden, Colorado.

Colorado School of Mines improved to 6-3 this season and earned their first conference win to move to 1-2, RMAC. Forward Courtney Martin, junior of Parker, Colorado, scored a game high 22 points and pulled in nine rebounds to lead the Orediggers. The Eagles, currently 1-7 overall and 1-3 in conference, kept it close most of the night. School of Mines shot 33 percent from the field; CSC finished just ahead at 34 percent. Point guard Emma Block, junior of Copenhagen, Denmark, led CSC with 13 points and a game-high four assists. Right behind, guard Kate Simonton, senior of Bakersfield, California, chipped in 12 points.

The two teams played each other evenly in the first half. School of Mines owned a 38-34 halftime lead over CSC shooting about 45 percent from the field. In the second half, the Eagles would tie it up 47-47 at the 11 minute mark with a layup from forward Maka Daysh, freshman of Tauranga, New Zealand, but the Orediggers would go on a 12-2 scoring run to pull away.

“We played well, but the scoring run they had in the second half really hurt us,” said Head Coach Tim Connealy. “Everyone played hard the whole night, we just let this game slip away late.”

The Eagles played Saturday against Colorado Christian University in another RMAC game, and the game would be decided in overtime.

Colorado Christian held 27-23 lead going into halftime, but the Eagle’s 30 point second half sent the game into overtime. Block showed a strong performance scoring a game-high 23 points on 12-35 shooting. Block also sunk the game-tying layup with one second left in the second half to send the game into overtime.

CSC’s center Maddie Metzger, sophomore of Georgetown, Texas added 10 points and pulled in a team-high seven rebounds.

“The ladies responded perfectly in the second half,” said Connealy. “We got the shots we wanted in the second half, but we just fell short in overtime.”

The Eagles and Cougars would be tied 53-53 at the end of regulation, but Colorado Christian would outscore CSC 9-3 in overtime to win 62-56.

Three Cougars scored double figures; forward Kate Louthan, junior of Colorado Springs, Colorado, led the way with 20 points. Colorado Christian would earn its second straight win Saturday moving to 2-8 overall and 2-2 RMAC.

Guard Taylor Torres, junior of Monument, Colorado, followed Louthan with 11 points and forward Ali Meyer, freshman of Amarillo, Texas with 10 points.

CSC will play back-to-back games in Denver Friday and Saturday against Regis University and Metro State University, respectively. Tip-off times for both games are set for 5 p.m.
