Women find a win in new year

Chadron State lost the free throw battle against the Fort Lewis Skyhawks, along with the game, 77-59 in the first RMAC game of the new year.

The Eagles fell to a 1-10 record while Fort Lewis advanced to 6-4. The Skyhawks led for the majority of the game and by as much as 21 points in the second half. The Eagles went 20 for 34 on free throws, only 58.8 percent. Fort Lewis went 77.1 percent as a team, making 27 out of 35.

Fort Lewis’ junior forward, Mary Brinton of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, led all scorers with 21. Brinton shot 70 percent from the field and the line. Kaile Magazzeni, senior forward of Gilbert, Arizona added 10 points, sinking three field goals and four free throws.

Maka Daysh, freshman forward of Tauranga, New Zealand led the Eagles in scoring with 11 and also pulled down eight rebounds. Junior guard Allegria Chisom, of Wichita, Kansas, added 10 points while Stephanie Knowles, junior guard of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Emma Block junior point guard of Copenhagen, Denmark, each added nine for the Eagles.

Chadron State won its second game of the season against Adams State University, advancing to a 2-10 record, 2-6 in the RMAC. Adams State fell to 1-10, 1-6 in the RMAC. The Eagles spread the ball well and cruised to a 70-56 victory over the Grizzlies.

Kayla Mathews, freshman point guard of Adelaide, South Australia, and Daysh led all scorers with 17 points each. Daysh also added seven boards, four of which were offensive. Knowles went five of six from the field and totaled 16 points. Knowles also led the team in free throws, tallying six of eight. Eight Eagles scored in the victory.

Although the Eagles gave up 20 offensive rebounds, they outscored the Grizzlies in points in the paint, 30-20, and second chance points, 13-8. Knowles also led the field with four steals, helping the Eagles outscore the Grizzlies in fast break points 10-4.

The Grizzlies were held to shooting 28.8 percent from the field. Desiree Anderson, senior guard of Denver, led Adams State with 15 points.

The Eagles will host Black Hills State, Jan. 10. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
