Eagle tracksters run down competition
Last weekend, Colorado School of Mines hosted a Twilight Indoor Track and Field Meet in Golden, Colorado. The Chadron State Eagles left with impressive victories and personal records.
Leading the way for the women’s team was junior Mel Herl, of Eaton, Colorado. Herl won the 20-pound weight throw with a 58 feet, 1 inch on Friday, then came back on Saturday to win shot put, posting a 44 feet, 7 inch throw, one inch shy of her career best. Sophomore Keri Huff, also of Eaton, Colorado, was teammates with Herl at Eaton High, and took third place in both the 20-pound weight throw and the shot put, posting scores of 48-6 3/4 and 39-5, respectively.
Chadron State also showed off plenty of young talent this weekend, including sophomores Tessa Gorsuch, of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Angelique Urenda, of Pueblo, Colorado. Gorsuch placed third in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.77 seconds, while Urenda won second in the high jump at 5 foot, 1 inch. Shelby Bozner, junior of Rock Springs, Wyoming, set a personal record in the 60-meter hurdles, coming in at 8.86 seconds and placing fourth.
The men’s team did not disappoint either; three different athletes won their respective events this weekend. Demarcus Simpson, of Lafayette, Georgia, won the men’s 60-meter dash in 6.9 seconds flat. Chris Cutcher, sophomore of Colorado Springs, Colorado, won the 60-meter hurdles in 8.21 seconds, and senior Kyle McCarthy, of Aurora, won the shot put event with a 52 foot throw. The Eagle’s also took second place in shot put, thanks to a 49-4 1/2 throw from Tanner Rien, junior of Mitchell. Skyler Hoopes, senior of Lusk, Wyoming, took second place for the Eagles with a 14 foot, 7 1/2 inch score in pole vaulting.
The Eagles look to build on this momentum this weekend, with their own Twilight Meet on Friday. Events begin at 1 p.m.
