Eagle wrestlers smash Thunder-Wolves

A lively and boisterous crowd backed the Chadron State College Eagle wrestlers Friday night as they edged the Colorado State University-Pueblo ThunderWolves, 26-10.

The stands in the NPAC were full of cheering fans as the Eagle wrestlers took down the ThunderWolves.

After the RMAC dual, the Eagles upped their season record to 7-6.

The Eagles started off weak, with a loss at 125-pounds, but Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, 133-pounds, brought the heat and pulled a 14-0 shutout and major decision against CSU’s Aaron Carrera, freshman of Pueblo, Colorado.

Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, 149-pounds, also won his match 14-4. Summers and Anderson each marked up their 20th win of the season at this dual.

Zach Denney, redshirt freshman of North Platte, 141-pounds, posted a 20-2 tech fall in his first collegiate match. Denney’s opponent, Jose Chavez, freshman of Center, Colorado, scored the first takedown, earning him two points, but Denney answered with 20 points in two periods.

“This match was a real big confidence booster for me,” Denney said. “I felt some pressure going into this match just because it was my first match back since my injuries. Now that I got that match out of the way I feel like I can relax and try to dominate the rest of my matches one match at a time.”

Also adding wins for the Eagles were Chance Helmick, freshman of Beatrice, 165-pounds; Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds; Dylan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 184-pounds; and Devan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 197-pounds.

This win was the 18th win of the season for Copeland.

The next wrestling action, also on home turf, will be against Western State Colorado University, and the action will begin at 1 p.m., Saturday in the Chicoine Events Center. The night is scheduled as Senior Night.
