Eagles steal thunder from CSU-Pueblo

The men’s basketball team got its fourth win of the season against Colorado State University-Pueblo. The Eagles were previously on a nine-game losing streak.
With a strong offensive performance, the Eagles handled the ThunderWolves defense with ease. Five Eagles ended the night with double digits in the scoring column. Senior Evan Brooks, of Ontario, California, led the team again with 18. Jay Feltson, junior center of Saginaw, Michigan, grabbed seven boards to go along with nine points.
The Eagles came alive in the second half from behind the arc. Six out of 8 threes helped the Eagles outscore their opponent 46-31 after the half.
The ThunderWolves trailed Chadron State for the majority of the game. Leading the game for over 36 minutes, the Eagles were not going to be denied a victory. Even when Pueblo tied the game early in the second half, the Eagles came roaring back, going on a 14-3 run.
Junior Davante McCallam, of Miami, shot 67 percent from the field, finishing with 11 points. Christopher Smith, senior of Pasadena, California, added 13.
Coming off a convincing victory, Chadron State couldn’t carry the momentum into Saturday night’s game against the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs.
Juniors, Derrick White, of Parker, Colorado, and Alex Welsh, of Westminster, Colorado, combined for 51 points, helping the Mountain Lions cruise to a 96-75 victory over the Eagles. White, the RMAC Preseason Player of the Year, shot 50 percent from the field, finishing with 26 points, while Welsh ended the night with 25.
The Mountain Lions finished the first half on a 31-10 run. The Eagles were never able to bounce back from the 21 point deficit. The Eagles once again had a solid offensive game, but were unable to handle the Mountain Lions on defense.
Brooks finished with 18 points. McCallam shot a team high 100 percent from the field, ending with 13 while also grabbing four rebounds. Junior Roderick Butler, of Detroit, shot 8-8 from the free throw line, adding 10 for the Eagles.
The Eagles tip off against Metro State, Friday at the Chicoine Events Center, following the conclusion of the women’s game.
