Wrestlers end regular season 9-8

The Eagle wrestlers rounded out their regular season strong with a 23-11 victory over the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers, Golden. This victory pushed the Eagles to a winning season with a 9-8 record overall and a 3-3 record in the RMAC.

The Eagles started off strong with a decision and a major decision from Robert Ozuna, freshman of Omaha, 125-pounds; and Taylor Summers, sophomore of Plymouth, 133-pounds.

The Eagles were unable to bag a win at 141-pounds, but Jacob Anderson, sophomore of Central City, 149-pounds, managed an 11-9 decision.

“I actually was up by quite a bit of points at the beginning of the match, and the other guy started to make a comeback on me,” Anderson said. “I just kept it in my mind that I couldn’t lose this match and that I had to win for the team.”

The Eagles lost the 157-pound match before really gaining steam and winning the next three matches.

Chance Helmick, freshman of Beatrice, 165-pounds, gained a 12-5 decision over his opponent; Caleb Copeland, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds, earned one of only two major decisions for the Eagles; and Dylan Fors, senior of Roseburg, Oregon, 184-pounds, earned a decision.

Jake Weber, sophomore of Rapid City, South Dakota, 285-pounds, earned the final win for the Eagles with another decision.

“We wrestled extremely well at Mines, we felt like we wrestled a lot better in terms of toughness,” Head Coach Brett Hunter said. “Our biggest obstacle going into next week is knowing we can beat anyone. We just need to believe in our shape, technique and most of all believe in ourselves.”

The next CSC wrestling action will take place in Pueblo, Colorado, at the RMAC Super Region 4 Tournament, Feb. 27-28.
