Secrets shared
Frank Warren, founder and curator of PostSecret.com, shared some secrets to a small audience of CSC students at the Galaxy Series event at Memorial Hall March 5 night.
Warren began his project in November 2004 by printing 3,000 blank postcards and handing them out to strangers on the streets of Washington D.C.
Ten years later, he is still not able to give a reason for doing this except that, “Sometimes when we keep a secret, the secret is actually keeping us.” Warren has included one of his own secrets in all six PostSecret books.
Over a decade, Warren has collected one million secrets and has raised over $1 million for suicide prevention.
“Suicide is America’s secret,” Warren stated. “Over 1,000 college students commit suicide each year. Twelve of us in this audience will think about taking our own lives. Four of us will actually try.”
Warren has received many secrets on assorted items such as an In-N-Out burger bag, a seashell, a naked Polaroid, and even an uncooked potato.
The All-American Rejects, a well-known American rock band, contacted Warren to feature real postcards in their music video for “Dirty Little Secret.” Warren agreed if they donated to the crisis Hopeline.
There was a variety of emotion at the event as Warren shared real secrets of hope, happiness, tragedy, and even his most commonly received secret, “I pee in the shower.”
Five CSC students shared their secrets live to the audience.
Kept secrets are walls, but shared secrets build bridges, Warren said.
“The smallest thing we do can save lives.”
