Golf team birdies at Mines

Thirty six holes were crammed into one, long day because of a rainy forecast as the CSC women’s golf team used three top 10 finishes to earn a second place team title at the South Dakota School of Mines Invitational, Tuesday.

At the end of the first round, the Eagles held a 10-stroke lead over Colorado Christian University. Schuyler Wetzel, junior of Hot Springs, South Dakota, led the team with a score of 82. Following closely, junior Emma Harris, of Wahoo, shot an 85.

In the second round of 18, the Eagles proved to be consistent, shooting the same as the first round as a team. Wetzel finished with an 83 for a total of 165, earning second in individual scores. Harris shot another 85 in the second round, for a total of 170, putting her in fourth place. Kelli Haynes, freshman of Whitney, shot a total of 176, which put her 10th for individual scores.

“Thirty six holes is a lot of golf,” Wetzel said. “We just had to be patient and play one shot at a time. This course had fast greens, so it was important to adjust to them.”

Amanda Kopren, senior of Bison, South Dakota, took home the individual title for Black Hills State University, with a two-round total of 163.

CCU came storming back in the last 18 holes to take the team championship.

CSC will return to the action at Colorado Mesa University, Tuesday.
