Thursday and Friday the CSC Men’s Ensemble, Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Concert Choir traveled to Wyoming to perform for various high schools in the eastern and central parts of the state.
On Thursday, the ensembles and choir performed in Casper at the Kelly Walsh High School, and in Riverton, they performed at the First Methodist Church. The Riverton High School Choir, directed by CSC alumnus Jon Marquez, performed for the CSC ensembles and a large audience. Then, the concert choir joined the Riverton students to perform “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.”
The Vocal Jazz performed two a capella songs; and the Men’s Ensemble and Concert Choir performed a mix of the songs that were performed Sunday during the concert at the Chadron Arts Center.
On Friday, the CSC Ensembles performed at the Buffalo and Sundance high schools.
On Sunday, the Men’s Ensemble performed six numbers. They included “Veni Creator Spiritus,” “Song of Peace,” “Der Gondelfahrer,” “Die Nacht,” “Blackbird,” and “Please, Mr. Columbus!”
The last number, “Please, Mr. Columbus!” was an upbeat song that featured Zach Banzhaf, 21, junior of Chadron, as a soloist. It also featured stomping and exclamations from the rest of the singers on stage.
The Concert Choir performed eight numbers, including “Ne Irascaris Domine,” “Salve Regina,” “A New Heaven and A New Earth,” “Chariots,” “She Walks in Beauty,” “Silent Noon,” “What a Wonderful World,” and “I Sing Because I Am Happy.”
“A New Heaven and A New Earth” was an experimental musical number with text taken from Revelation 21: 1-5a. It featured dissonant chords, which moved to even less resolution as the song progressed. The song ended as something that an average listener may not be able to recognize as music. Director and Music Professor Joel Schreuder prefaced the song with an explanation.
“What a Wonderful World” also featured Banzhaf as a soloist.
