CSC athlete jumps to 4th in NACAC games
Sophomore Damarcus Simpson, of Lafayette, Georgia, traveled to San Jose, Costa Rica, to compete in the North American, Central American, Caribbean Association Championships. Simpson finished fourth in the long jump with a mark of 24 feet 11 inches. Cameron Burrell, of the University of Houston, won the event with a 26-5.5.
Simpson said that he didn’t really feel different going against the international competition.
“I kept the same mindset and hype coming off Nationals,” Simpson said. “I got a good experience going to Costa Rica. I didn’t compete very well, but it was a great first time experience, and I discussed all the pros and cons of my jumping with Carl Lewis, track and field’s number one athlete.”
Simpson, who is no stranger to the podium, won the long jump for both the indoor and outdoor conference meet last season. He also earned a silver medal at the NCAA D-II National Indoor Meet, and the gold medal at the D-II National Outdoor Meet.

Simpson also received an invite to the USA National Championships in June, where he finished seventh out of 19 competitors.
“I feel like I did well at Nationals,” Simpson said. “Coming out seventh in the country for your first USA nationals isn’t bad. I could’ve jumped better, but it’ll be that much better doing at the Olympic trials in July.”
Simpson also said that he wants to stay focused on the upcoming track seasons, stay healthy, jump 27 feet a few times, and prepare for the Olympic trials.
