Back to the 90s

Nostalgia for the 90s; the smell of popcorn filled the air and balloons waved as 1990’s babies gathered in the Gold Room to relive some of their childhood memories Monday night. Incredible music played in the background as the students grouped around tables to play board games and enjoy snacks.

Excited to bring back the kid in them for the night, students showed up early to start the evening off right. The game Sorry kicked off the night as four students gathered around the table for friendly competition. Students soon filled the tables to play Monopoly, Uno, Nintendo, M.A.S.H, Clue and Connect Four bringing back childhood memories.

The crowd was pleased with the music selections as most had memorized the lyrics and sang along to the perfect mix of 90s songs. The speakers blasted hits like “U Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer, “I Want It That Way” by Backstreet Boys, “Baby Got Back” by Sir-Mix-a-Lot, “Barbie Girl” by Aqua, and “Hit Me Baby One More Time” by Britney Spears. The noise level of the room grew as the competitive side of the students were unveiled. A game of Uno got intense as players threw down x2, skip, and reverse cards causing major havoc, while the Sorry table was the loudest as the competitors fought for the win! Prizes were won every 30 minutes. Kianna Hobbs, 19, junior of Newcastle, Wyoming, won the first prize. Being able to select any small prize she chose “The Rugrats Movie.”

“I was super excited to win, come on, it’s ‘The Rugrats’!” Hobbs said. Fun and laughter filled the room and overflowed into the dorm hallways. As students passed by hearing all the activity, they began to join in on the festivities and played a game or two. Resident Assistant Zerek Jones, 21, senior of La Junta, Colorado, said “It was one of the more successful events so far this year.”

After the game portion of the event, a 90s dance was scheduled to complete the night. Unfortunately, students were exhausted from competitive game play and singing-along to the music, the night ended early and the dance was cancelled.

So students, turn up your boom box and grab your favorite board games because in a world full of homework, tests, and project it’s great to remember the carefree times of childhood.
