Long distance teams win big at home

The men’s and women’s teams took first place, Saturday, at the Chadron State meet.

The women’s team scored 19 points, compared to the 36-point finish of South Dakota School of Mines. The men’s team also fared well with its win of 23 points. South Dakota Mines followed with 49 points, and Central Wyoming College trailed with 59.

The first male to cross the finish line in a time of 19 minutes, 26 seconds, Alejandro Garcia, senior of Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, who is running unattached this season. Therefore, the first point-scoring place went to junior Dylan Stansbury, of Crawford, with a 19:38 run. Placing third was Evans Koech, of Nairobi, Kenya, in a time of 20:00. Coming in at 20:32 in sixth place was Kyle Dietsch, junior of Sheridan, Wyoming. Phill Duncan, sophomore of Chadron, rounded out the men’s 23-point finish with his time of 20:36 in seventh place.

Running unattached in 10th place was Josef Gertner, junior of Fort Morgan, Colarado, in a time of 20:56. Eric Yager, sophomore of Hot Springs, South Dakota, came in 11th in 20:57. With a time of 21:26 in 13th place was Hank Jackson, junior of Lingle, Wyoming. Taylor Dick, freshman of Douglas, Wyoming, was 14th, finishing in 21:32. Coming in 15th was junior Robert Ricks, of Douglas, Wyoming, running unattached in 21:43. Levi Avila, sophomore of Mitchell, placed 16th with a time of 21:44. Junior Epi Nunez, of Santa Rosa, California, finished in 21:52 and was 17th. Senior Doug Harris, of Las Vegas, placed 19th with a time of 22:03. Zack Doffin, junior of Stanton, finished 20th in 22:16, and coming in 23rd was freshman Philip Lewis, of Basset, running unattached in a time of 22:59.

The women’s race followed the men’s. Senior Rebecca Volf, of Wood River, clenched her second meet victory in back to back weeks with a time of 14:55. Junior Nicky Banzhaf, of Chadron, completed the course in 15:03, coming in third. Jayme Nunes, senior of Alliance, finished fourth in 15:13. Right at Nunes’ heels and rounding out the women’s 19-point finish was freshman Alyse Henry, of Rock Springs, Wyoming, in fifth place with a time of 15:14.

Margaret Vinton, sophomore of North Platte, placed seventh in 15:43. Senior Sarah Townsend, of Douglas, Wyoming, completed the race in 16:05 and placed 13th. Coming in 14th was Sandra Pelayo, junior of Cozad, with a time of 16:17. In 18th was Justine Stone, sophomore of Maywood, in 17:17. Sophomore Taylor Allison, of Gordon, finished 19th in 17:23. Coming in 20th with a time of 17:54 and running unattached was Callie Johnson, junior of Casper, Wyoming.

Saturday, both teams will compete in the Woody Greeno meet hosted by Nebraska Wesleyan in Lincoln.
