The importance of the 1st amendment
The first amendment to the Constitution gives all Americans freedom of religion, freedom of speech or of the press, freedom to peaceably assemble, and the freedom to petition to the Government for a redress of grievances.
Press freedom means that any form of news media including print, television, web, and radio are not subject to government censorship. The United States government does not have the right to control or block anything from being published by the press.
A term that is often associated with the first amendment is prior restraint. Prior restraint is an attempt by the government to prevent the expression of ideas before they are published. Under the protections of the first amendment prior restraint is unconstitutional.
The first amendment gives Americans the right to publish anything. However, it does not necessarily protect them once it is published. If statements are published that are not true, then the government can intervene and press libel charges against the person who wrote the lies or the publication that he or she is associated with.
The first amendment is important to journalists because it legally protects their livelihood.
It is a journalist’s job to publish the truth about the government, and the first amendment provides them with the protections that they need so that they do not get imprisoned for publishing the truth.
In other countries, the citizens do not have the right to say anything they want about the government. And if they say something that angers those who have more money and power than they do, they may just find themselves in a cellar with handcuffs on or even dead. Because there are no journalists to publish the flaws, these governments can get away with anything they please.
The beauty of the freedoms that journalists in America enjoy is that we help to keep the government honest. We expose the flaws of those that are ranked higher than we are.
