Novak leads cowboys to 1st place at Sheridan College

The Chadron State College Rodeo team had an outstanding performance at Sheridan College last weekend. The men won the team title with a total of 615 points and the women landing fourth with 210 points.

Some of those outstanding performances included Prestyn Novak, sophomore of Newell, South Dakota, who placed first for men all-around with 165 points and took second in tie down roping with times of 11.4 seconds and 11.6; Rolly Fortune, senior of Interior, South Dakota, who took third in tie down roping with a time that was only five tenths of a second slower than Novak’s.

Lane Day, senior of Bartlett, earned first in steer wrestling; Devin Dibbern, freshman of Riverdale, placed third in steer wrestling; Justin Kissack, junior of Gillette, Wyoming, placed second in bareback riding; and Colin Dibbern, freshman of Riverdale, placed fourth in saddle bronc riding.

Performances from the women’s team included Laura O’Leary, freshman of Timber Lake, South Dakota, who placed fourth in barrel racing, and Kayellyn Hall, junior of Minatare, who placed fifth in barrel racing with a time only two tenths of a second slower than O’Leary’s.

“This is the best start our team has ever had,” Nate McFadden, senior of Dunning, said. “We all believe we can be taking a men’s and women’s team to the college finals at the end of the season. We just have to keep working hard and trusting in our abilities.”

The CSC Rodeo team will compete again Friday-Sunday in Lamar, Colorado.
