Both the men and women’s choirs performed in front of an audience of around 100. There was a total of 11 songs performed by the two groups.

Under the instruction of Professor Joel Schreuder, the Men’s Ensemble performed five songs. Four of them were done acapella. The last song was accompanied with piano played by accompanist, Bobby Pace. The song was about the importance of singing. It was a delightfully and cheery list of reasons why men should learn to sing.

“It is easily learned,” the song lyrics said, it is also “delightful and good for your health.”

The song also mentioned that there is no instrument’s sound that is comparable to a man’s voice. The audience’s response to the performance supports this statement. All of the songs received heavy applause and the final song even evoked laughter from the crowd.

The Arioso Women’s Ensemble was opened with a few words of thanks by Una Taylor, associate professor of music.

“There was originally no theme for this concert,” she later said. “Then there turned out to be one.”

There were a few songs about faith including two hymns and one prayer.

Before the women performed, she said that music “has a way of expressing things that only music can.”

The Arioso set included a lot of movement as well as the use of large sticks or wooden poles as instruments in one song. Taylor introduced Dara Edwards, senior of North Platte, for her solo in the fifth song. The crowd roared at the end of this performance.

“Dara is and has been such an asset to the group,” Taylor said. “I chose her because I wanted to see her shine, which she did, which made me happy.”

The audience seemed pleased with the concert on a whole.

“They always do amazing,” one onlooker said, “but this one was exceptional.”

The Concert Choir accompanied by the Community Choir will perform at 3 p.m., Sunday at the Chadron Arts Center.
