NMHU earn 1st win of season against CSC, 24-16

Saturday, the Eagles only produced 221 yards of total offense in their loss against New Mexico Highlands University, 24-16 at Elliott Field. The Eagles fell to 4-5 overall, 3-4 in RMAC play. The Cowboys jumped to ninth place in the RMAC with an overall record of 1-8, 1-6 against conference opponents.

CSC only held the ball for 19 minutes and 36 seconds. The Cowboys had over 40 minutes of possession time. NMHU also converted eight of 20 third downs. CSC only found success on two of 15.

NMHU managed to gain 445 yards of offense, 247 through the air thanks to freshman quarterback Trevor Swenson, of Las Vegas. Swenson completed 16 passes while throwing for two touchdowns and two interceptions. Senior wide receiver of White Center, Washington, Kirt Terry-Springs caught both touchdowns while gaining 146 yards. Junior Will Hanford, of Visalia, California, caught four passes for 65 yards.

CSC’s Matt Vinson, sophomore of Box Elder, South Dakota, threw for 120 yards and one touchdown. This was the fifth consecutive game Vinson has thrown for a touchdown, and the second game in a row without a turnover. Max Gray, redshirt freshman of Arlington, Washington, led CSC’s receivers with 48 yards and a touchdown.

Neither team had a running back record over 100 yards on the ground.

Kevin Coy, redshirt freshman of Davenport, Florida, led the Eagle backs with 60 yards while Derek Jackson, sophomore of Pueblo West, Colorado, gained 55 and a touchdown.

For NMHU, three juniors led the ground game.

Davonte Lynch, of Oakland, California, earned 94 yards and Sir Darius Yarbrough, of Santa Claria, California, ran for 58. Vincent Venegas, of West Covina, California, ran for 26 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively for CSC, senior Clay Cundall, senior of Greybull, Wyoming, led the team with 15 tackles, two for a loss, and one sack. Kirk Durtsche, redshirt freshman of Casper, Wyoming, shined with 14 tackles and an interception late in the third quarter, stopping a long offensive drive by the Cowboys. Senior Dylan Furrier, of Tucson, Arizona, recorded nine tackles and the other interception.

The Cowboys were led by Don Carter, senior of Bel Air, Massachusetts, and Erick Zarate, junior of Long Beach, California, with six tackles each. Hanford also recovered a fumble on special teams.

The Eagles will attempt to push their record back to even, Saturday,  against Western New Mexico University, in Silver City. The Mustangs are ranked eighth in the RMAC with a record of 3-6, 2-5 in conference play.  WNMU passing offense is top ranked in the RMAC, averaging 387.2 yards per game.
