Senate hosts open forum for student input on The Big Event allocation

An open forum to discuss the allocation of $13,494.11 for The Big Event was Monday. Nathaniel Brown started off the forum by saying The Big Event is “Chadron’s biggest community service project.” He said the budget includes food, T-shirts, advertising costs, and everything they are hoping to accomplish this year.

Alyssa Sanders said that last year, the volunteers were spread too thin, and so this year will focus on only Chadron, not Crawford. She also said that about 100 volunteers signed up but did not show up to The Big Event. Sanders said the coordinators will place more people at each job site this year so they  “under-promise and over-deliver.” A potential way the coordinators have discussed to ensure that people go to their job sites is taking the food and T-shirts to the job site. The coordinators also said that some coaches signed up their entire sports team but didn’t tell the athletes so they will be working on that factor communication. The coordinators may also tell the volunteers what their job site is before the day of The Big Event.

Sanders and Jessica Orose said that since students like to work with people they know, they may figure out how many people each job site needs then let students sign up for the sites with their friends.

Molly O’Connell asked how the coordinators of The Big Event are going to work with clubs. Orose said it would be most efficient to attend club meetings to get more students to sign up for The Big Event.
