Senators brainstorm ways to improve CSC

A Student Senate workshop was hosted Saturday for senators to discuss issues on campus and projects.

Student Senate Adviser Deena Kennell explained Robert’s Rules of Order to the senators. She said that these rules “make for a more efficient meeting.” She discussed the basics of the rules with the senators and showed a few videos to help explain.

Senator Mauro Ovando suggested that the agenda be more thoroughly filled out week to week.

Senators were split up into groups based on their position to discuss problems and projects on campus. Then they came back and discussed them in a large group.

E.H.P.C.P.S.W. representatives said many of the students in RHOP are leaving because classes are too hard and the students cannot handle it. They said this is because of the professors, not the material. They also said that they want the Planetarium on campus to be opened and used more for events but it is a funding issue. The senators also said they want more water bottle filling stations on campus.

The dorm senators want to have a food bank for students for when Dining Services are closed. They discussed how students don’t always have the money or transportation to buy food during the breaks. They also want to open C-Stores in Edna and Eagle Ridge and getting an ice machine in High Rise.

The B.E.A.M.M.S. representatives said that a Spanish program would be beneficial to CSC. They said it is a funding issue right now. Some of their suggestions include having the Chadron High School Spanish teacher come over once a week, having a distance learning program with Wayne State if they have a Spanish professor, or getting a Rosetta Stone program online for students. They also want to have more color printers on campus. They suggested getting printers that student’s computers can be connected to.

The Liberal Arts and at large senators suggested getting condom dispensers on campus. They want to put them in the bathrooms and throughout the dorms. They also brought up the Internet speed, having vending machines that accept credit/debit cards, and increasing the library hours.

Pat Beu, student affairs senior director, told the senators if they bring issues to administration, they need to make sure they also bring creative solutions.
