Student leaders discuss issues on campus

A general assembly was hosted last Friday for Student Senate and all its subsidiary committees. All the advisers were absent and excused.

CAB reported that many clubs have been using the inflatable movie screen. They have also been doing Free Movie Night and Free Bowling Night. They are working on bringing more activities, including Zorb Racing, to campus.

Members of AFB are working on changing how AFB functions. They have been discussing voting rights, advisers’ roles. They said that one of their major roles is to advise Senate on adjusting clubs’ budgets if a club gets into trouble.

Student Senate reported that their major project this semester is the leadership conference. A meet and greet with the senators is at 6 p.m., tonight in the Scottsbluff room.

After the reports, the attendees discussed issues and solutions for the issues on campus. Getting ice machines for the dorms, extending library hours, installing hand dryers instead of paper towels into buildings on campus, advertising Health 101, and advertising counseling services were issues brought up at the meeting.

Another issue discussed was the condition of the dorm buildings and how some of them need renovation. The condition of the pool sticks in various places on campus was also discussed; Senator Gavan Archibald said students need to take care of the pool sticks that are on campus.

Another issue that was raised was the students’ lack of knowledge when it comes to emergency procedures. Attendees want to more effectively communicate the procedures to students who live both on and off campus.

Student retention was also discussed at the assembly. Student Senate President Katrina Hurley said that she wants to make CSC less of a “suitcase college.” Solutions that were discussed for this problem include buying laser guns and zorb balls, a putt-putt golf course, barbeques, jeopardy games, cook-offs, and RA’s hosting events to keep students on campus on weekends. Solutions to keep students attending school at CSC include looking into degree programs, master programs, and getting a foreign language program.

Students said other students aren’t informed about what is happening on campus. Some solutions for this problem include starting the “remind 101” texts to students, advertising more on social media, sending out more emails, and advertising the college social media pages more at New Student Orientation. One concern about the emails that are already sent to students is that not every event is in the emails. Another concern is that if all of these solutions are implemented at once, students will get overwhelmed and won’t read anything that is sent to them.

One senator mentioned that personally inviting students to events will be the most effective way to get students to the events.

The recycling program was also discussed. One way is to invest in green pails for the recycling instead of the boxes so the program is more recognizable. If students start recycling more and prove that recycling is a real problem on campus, the administrators will notice and begin to help along with the janitors. Bins may also be put by the elevators.

The internet speed was brought up at the meeting. Suggestions to put Ethernet cords and usb extensions in every dorm room on campus were discussed.
