Volleyball team falls to Rangers in 3

“Leaders, consistence, vocal.”

Three words Coaching Assistant Whitney Roth used to describe how she wanted her volleyball team to play Saturday against the Regis University Rangers. Unfortunately, the CSC team did well overall but couldn’t get the win, resulting in a 0-3 loss on Senior Night.

In a struggle to start strong, the Eagles fell behind in the first set allowing the Rangers to win 25-16.

The Eagles brought the momentum into set two, leading throughout most of the set and gaining their largest advantage of four points. That wasn’t enough as the Eagles took another loss.

In set three, the Eagles wanted this win. They came out strong leading the majority of the time and achieved 16 of their 38 total kills. Powerful hitters from both sides made the set interesting but the Rangers outshined the Eagles leading the Rangers to a match victory.

“We struggled all around tonight; we were flat and didn’t play our best,” Roth said. “Lela played great; she should be proud of the way she played tonight.”

Graduating outside hitter Lelalelei Nomura, senior of Pago Pago, American Samoa, led the Eagles in kills with 14 and only two errors finishing the night with a .400 hitting percentage. Nomura ends her season with 194 total kills in 86 sets played.

“I think we did a good job,” Nomura said after the game. “Sometimes things don’t go as you want, but overall we did a good job tonight.”

Rudy Leasau, junior outside hitter of LaMesa, California, ended her season with 10 kills and 11 digs against the Rangers. Also included in her game stats are two blocks.

Middle hitter and senior Sina Magua, of Ewa Beach, Hawaii, led the defense with three blocks along with Sierra Winkle, freshman of Tucson, Arizona, who led the team in digs at 17. Defensively, Regis was able to return the ball efficiently as Rebecca Sponcil, senior libero from Phoenix, led the Rangers with 22 digs.

Freshman setter Madison Webb, of Loveland, Colorado, wrapped up her season with a total of 32 set assists.

Additional seniors Jamie McClain, defensive specialist of Chadron, contributed to the team with six digs and Justine Ackie, setter of Phoenix, tied Webb in leading aces with one.

Six seniors were recognized before the game as the player’s parents escorted them onto the court and a summary of their athletic college career achievements were read. Seniors received a framed CSC volleyball jersey corresponding with their jersey number.

The Chadron State volleyball team concluded its season with eight conference wins and nine overall this season; the program’s best record since 2007.
