CSC’s math, science department celebrates weekly science days
From a young age we tell our children that they can be anything they set their mind to. By introducing ideas early The Math and Science Department of Chadron State College hopes to see those children pursuing these degrees in the field for their future. Science Days is this idea in action.
Children of the third, fourth, and fifth grade experienced ways to protect themselves from the elements of space and the effects these elements have on the body.
One experiment children were able to participate in involved the effects of air pressure on a marshmallow.
The children’s interest was maintained as the marshmallow grew to three times its size.
Another subject of interest involved the children going outside to test the effectiveness of a space blanket to protect themselves against the cold weather.
Around 18 children attended this day of the event, but other days saw as many as 35 children arrive to the event. According to Beth Wentworth, associate professor of mathematical sciences, children who regularly return to the event are children who just really like science. She continued saying many children do not experience a hands-on experience like this until a later grade. The college offers them resources they would not normally experience with a normal elementary education.
