Opinion

Complaining should be a motivator, not an end to means

I’ve never been the type of person that openly voices my opinion. If someone talks about something that interests me or something that I know quite a bit about, I have no problem with sharing how I feel, but for the most part, I would rather keep to myself about most subjects.

It’s not that I am afraid of somebody not liking me for what I say. Frankly I could care less if you agree with me or not. The biggest reason that I have is that anyone can sit around and do nothing but complain about anything and everything they can. One of my biggest pet peeves is when someone dedicates a large portion of their time to complaining about things that more than likely don’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

If you constantly complain about one thing, ask yourself this question: am I helping the situation by complaining about it? If all you do is complain about how the government is ran or simply how people act, is that really doing any good? How about you try something new and attempt to change it. If you don’t agree with the way the student government is run or if you feel like the hall in your dorm gets loud and rowdy, do something to fix it. Apply yourself and actually get in a position to make a change.

I am by no means better at this than the average person. It is so easy to sit back and find something wrong with nearly everything in life. That is the simple and effortless route. If that is the path that you choose to take, please let me know how much your whining about it to your roommate or best friend did.

I get tired of “keyboard warriors” and people that waste their time yelling at a “senseless” politician through the television screen. Newsflash, they can’t hear you. Why not put a little effort into improving the situation instead of telling everyone around you how bad that person is. Ask yourself if you have a better idea that might benefit the public better. If you actually do, then do something about it. Instead of bashing someone’s idea, try to think of a better one.

Changing something for the better is not an easy task. It might only take a day or two, or it might take a year, which is the biggest challenge. You have to be willing to dedicate as much time as it takes to make a difference. If you’re not willing to do that, then you probably shouldn’t let it bother you that much any way.

Like I said before, I have little room to tell you that complaining is such a bad thing. Complaining at least sparks thought and just might drive an idea into your head, but try to focus on that idea. In fact, this article is really me complaining about others that complain. My hope is that I may spark a change the way you think and possibly spark some much needed changes, not just in Small Town, Nebraska, but in much bigger places too.
