Eagles shoot by Rangers, 70-67
After scoring 37 points in the second half, the Eagles were able to squeeze by the Regis University Rangers, 70-67. CSC capitalized on 14 shots from behind the 3-point line.
Two key players were missing for CSC, junior Warren Gordon, of Indianapolis, who injured his ribs during practice, and Sharif Black, sophomore of Detroit, who had the flu.
Billy Johnson, junior of Cedar Hill, Texas, paced the way for the Eagles, scoring 23 points and shot 100 percent from long range in the second half. Leigh Saffin, redshirt freshman of Warnambool, Australia, shot 50 percent from the 3-point line, scoring 12 points for the Eagles. No other Eagles were able to score double digits.
“We hadn’t really seen a full-court press all year and we knew they were going to do that,” Saffin said. “We had to make sure we looked after the ball and really shared it on offense and so we could get good shots.”

Andre Miller, junior of San Mateo, California, scored nine points on three 3-point baskets. He also added four assists, one steal, and three rebounds. Senior Davante McCallam, of Miami, led the Eagles in boards with seven.
For the Rangers, Dexter Sienko, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, scored 18 points and four rebounds. Noah King, junior of Dallas, and Ryan Beisty, freshman of Newcastle, Australia, also added 10 points each. King also accounted for six assists.
Regis did outscore CSC in the paint 26-22, but the Eagles were able to out rebound the Rangers, 31-27. The Eagles only gave up four offensive rebounds and turned the ball over just 10 times.
CSC’s next matchup will be against Black Hills State University 7:30 p.m., Friday, following the conclusion of the women’s game.
The Yellow Jackets have one of the best defenses in the conference, and lead the RMAC in defensive rebounds.
“We haven’t really seen much of them because they lost a lot of guys from last year,” Saffin said. “They’re a pretty smart team that shares the ball a lot and execute well on offense and rebound well on the offensive end too. They’ll shoot a lot of threes as well.”
