Women’s basketball lose 2 in South Dakota

Last weekend, the Eagles traveled to South Dakota to face off against RMAC opponents South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and Black Hills State University.
In the first game, the Eagles faced off with the Hardrockers in what turned out to be a nail-biter. Offensively, the Eagles were more balanced than usual having three players score in double digits. Stephanie Knowles, senior of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Maka Daysh, sophomore of Tauranga, New Zealand; and Erin Graham, junior of DeLand, Florida, all managed to score 10 points apiece. While Allegria Chisom, senior of Wichita, Kansas; Maddie Metzger, junior of Georgetown, Texas; and Emma Block, senior of Copenhagen, Denmark, all pitched in eight points each. Five Eagle players collected one assist; those Eagles were Kayla Matthews, sophmore of Adelaide, Australia; Knowles; Chisom; Block; and Graham.
Defensively, the Eagles let the Hardrockers get off to a fast start in the first quarter, allowing 22 points, while only scoring 11 but tightened things up in the second quarter, only allowing seven points and scoring 15.
Graham led the Eagles in rebounds with eight total, all of which were defensive. Daysh and Chisom both collected seven rebounds. Knowles, who impacted every aspect of the game, led in blocks on the evening with two out of the teams total three and tied for the steals leader with Daysh and Metzger. The Eagles played well, but let the game slip away in the final minute, eventually losing, 58-56.
The next day the Eagles played the Yellow Jackets in the final game of the weekend, the Eagles again saw a good balanced scoring attack coming from three of their key players. Knowles, Daysh, and Block all managed to dish out four assists. The Eagles did not shoot the ball well this game which showed in the second quarter when they only scored four points and allowed the Yellow Jackets to pull away with the lead.
Daysh anchored the Eagles defense, collecting a total of nine rebounds, six of which were defensive.Graham also helped out, grabbing five defensive rebounds. Graham and Chisom also showed their knack for creating turnovers, tying for the most steals on either team with three. The Eagles did manage to play good defense for the majority of the game but because of their poor shooting, couldn’t pull out a win, eventually losing, 69-54.
The Eagles face off against New Mexico Highlands University and Western New Mexico University on the road this weekend.
