Eagle wrestlers win 5th straight dual

The Chadron State Eagle wrestlers started off their 2016 season Thursday by taking down Colorado School of Mines, Golden. They were able to carry that win to Kearney where they dueled Minot State University, Minot, North Dakota; Newman University, Wichita, Kansas; University of Mary, Bismarck, North Dakota; and Southwest Minnesota State University, Marshall.
CSC now holds a 9-1 record, 1-0 in conference. It is the best start for the team in recent history.
Chadron State trumped Colorado Mines 32-12, dropping only three matches. Chance Helmick, sophomore of Beatrice, 165-pounds; Caleb Copeland, junior of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds; and Cooper Cogdill, redshirt freshman of Chadron, 285-pounds, pinned their opponents in 4:49, 2:41, and 4:31, respectively.
Taylor Summers, junior of Plymouth, 133-pounds, and Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington, 149-pounds, both earned major decisions against their opponents. Brandon Kile, freshman of Hastings, 125-pounds, and Shane Rodenburg, freshman of Kent City, Michigan, 184-pounds, each posted decisions.
The Chadron State wrestlers kept their momentum through the weekend and swept all four non-conference duals Saturday at the Midwest Duals hosted by the University of Nebraska- Kearney.
Chadron defeated Minot State, 39-10, dropping only two matches. Brock Thumm, redshirt freshman of Watervliet, Michigan, 133-pounds, McKinney, and Copeland all pinned their opponents. Their momentum was matched by Summers who put a tech fall on the board.
Rodenburg earned a 5-3 decision, and Stuart Hircock, sophomore of Amherst, earned a 7-1 decision. Kile won his match by forfeit.
In the dual against Newman Universtiy, Chadron prevailed once again winning, 33-12. Summers won by another tech fall followed by a pin in 2:29 from Joshua Miller, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado, 141-pounds, and a pin by McKinney in 1:41.
Helmick held his ground and earned a major decision, followed by decisions from Copeland and Rodenburg. Cogdill won his match by forfeit.
The CSC wrestlers were able to keep up the pace as they began the dual against University of Mary, tallying a final score of 24-13. The Eagles pulled away with three major decisions, three decisions and a win by forfeit.
Although the margin of win was the smallest between Chadron and Southwestern Minnesota State, the Eagles still pulled off an impressive win, with a final score of 24-16. Summers earned his third tech fall of the weekend. McKinney also added points to the board with an 11-0 major decision.
Also posting points for the Eagle wrestlers were Kile, Helmick, and Hircock with decisions of 4-1, 5-2, and 7-2, respectively.
The next wrestling action for CSC took place last night at Colorado State Universtiy-Pueblo against the ThunderWolves. The dual began at 7 p.m. and was not completed by press time.
At 8:10 p.m., the Eagles were down 9-7 with four matches remaining.
Cogdill lost a close decision against Jacob Mitchell, redshirt junior of Portland, Oregon, 4-3. Kile also lost via decision to Adelimo Salazar, redshirt junior of Leadville, Colorado, 6-1. Summers picked up a major decision win over Ruben Lucero, freshman of Greeley, Colorado, 14-0. Miller also picked up a decision over Kyle Fantin, redshirt sophomore of Cave Creek, Arizona, 2-7.
No. 2 ranked McKinney lost to redshirt senior of Pueblo, Tim Urenda, 11-9, and CSU-P’s Nathaniel McKimson defeated Porter 6-1.
