11-1: CSC’s wrestling team prepares for the RMAC tournament.

The CSC wrestling team improved to an 11-1 record, courtesy of two wins over RMAC opponents, Colorado State University-Pueblo and Adams State University. It was the first victory over CSU-Pueblo under Head Coach Brett Hunter.
Against the ThunderWolves, the Eagles narrowly escaped with the win, 16-15. The only extra point victory came from Taylor Summers, junior of Plymouth, 133-pounds, who earned a major decision against his opponent Ruben Lucero, freshman of Greeley, Colorado. Tim Urenda, redshirt senior of Pueblo, Colorado, was able to score a decision over No. 2 ranked Terrance McKinney, sophomore of Spokane, Washington.
Other scorers for CSC included Joshua Miller, sophomore of Bennett, Colorado; Chance Helmick, sophomore of Beatrice, 165-pounds; Caleb Copeland, junior of Bennett, Colorado, 174-pounds; and Stuart Hircock, sophomore of Amherst, 197-pounds.
“Both Helmick and Miller are really taking stride the past month or two,” Hunter said. “At this level being consistent is the most valuable lesson that can be taught and both of them are doing a great job right now.”

Against the Grizzlies, bonus point wins led the Eagles to the 25-19 victory. Both Adams State and CSC won five weight classes, but the Eagles scored a pin, a technical fall, and two forfeits. The Grizzlies scored a pin, a major decision, and three decisions.
ASU’s Martin Ramirez, senior of Elk Grove, California, pinned Summers 1:52 into the first round. Tui Laulu, heavyweight junior of Peyton, Colorado, earned a major decision over Cooper Cogdill, redshirt freshman of Chadron.
Winners for CSC included Miller, who scored the technical fall over Zach Mahaney, senior of Alamosa, Colorado. McKinney, earned the lone Eagle pin over Devin Vasquez, redshirt sophomore of El Paso, Texas, in just 1:19. Helmick scored a decision victory over Koery Windham, redshirt sophomore of Sante Fe, New Mexico. It was Miller’s ninth win in a row and Helmick’s 13th.
“We are looking for our most consistent wrestlers to do what needs to be done,” Hunter said. “Guys like Summers, McKinney, Helmick, and Copeland, but we feel like even our younger guys can do well and score points for us.”
According to the NCAA coaches rankings, CSC received votes, but not enough to land a spot in the top 20. California Baptist University, Western State Colorado, and Colorado Mesa are ranked in the poll. CSU-Pueblo also received votes, but not enough to crack the national ranks. The Eagles will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the RMAC championships, Sunday. Hunter said that being ranked nationally has not been a goal for this season.
“Our goals are to be conference champions and qualify guys to the national tournament. If we can take care of those things the rankings will follow,” Hunter said.
