Spring Daze committee looking for ideas

An open forum for the “psychedelic” themed Spring Daze event Senate is bringing to campus April 28-30 was in the Ballroom at 3 p.m., Friday.

The planning committee members present were Student Senate President Katrina Hurley, CAB Vice Chair of Finance Molly O’Connell, and Senator of Edna Hall Teryn Blessin. Senator of Kent Hall Samantha Merrill and two students were also present.

The Nearly Naked Mile is April 28, Mesmerie Entertainment LLC. will be on campus April 29, and the following events will incorporate the entire campus on April 30: petting zoo, dummy roping, mechanical bull, life size monopoly, slip n’ slide, adult bouncy castles, pick-up sand volleyball games, dunk tank with professors, a rock wall, bubble soccer, art exhibit, carnival games, a barbeque, live music in the amphitheater from 9 a.m. — 9 p.m., and a disc jockey from 9 p.m. –1 a.m.

Carnival games may include a ring toss, plinko, a henna tattoo station, flower-crown-making tent, and sand art. RLA will be providing snow cones. The students requested fried food stations. Other possible components include an obstacle course, food trucks, and a hamster wheel.

A proposed idea is to have the event free for students but have a general admission of $5 per person or five nonperishable food items per person for community members.

The committee also wants to give out “swag” items to students. Proposed ideas include T-shirts, tanks, bro-tanks, zip drives, hats, wristbands, and lanyards.

Spring Daze event will be advertised in surrounding areas including Rapid City, South Dakota.

Senate wants this to be an annual event that will promote locality by incorporating local businesses, bands, and the community.

The planning committee didn’t have a budget at the time of the open forum and Monday at the Student Senate meeting, Hurley said a budget will be brought to Senate Monday, Feb. 1.
