Eagles drop 2 home games

The Eagles looked to get back on track, hoping to beat RMAC opponents Colorado Christian University and Colorado School of Mines at home after a tough loss to Fort Lewis College, Durango, Colorado. The Eagles suffered a slow shooting night in the first half against the Cougars of Colorado Christian University but picked it up in the second half to tie the game. However, they could never gain the lead and would eventually lose, 85-77. The shooting woes continued for the Eagles the next night as they lost to the Orediggers of Colorado School of Mines, Golden, 63-46.

Offensively, the Eagles struggled against the Cougars in the first half, only shooting 30.56 percent from the field and 14.29 percent from the 3-point line. They managed to pick it up in the second-half, shooting 51.72 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point line to help them tie the lead four times. Kayla Mathews, sophomore of Adelaide, Australia, led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points on 5 of 10 from the field, 1 of 3 from the 3-point line, and 3 of 5 from the free-throw line.

Two other Eagles also tied for second leading scorer with 12 points: Allegria Chisom, senior of Wichita, Kansas, and Maka Daysh, sophomore of Tauranga, New Zealand. The trio combined to score 38 out of the team’s total. Mathews also dished out six assist to lead all players.

The Eagles struggled on defense to keep the Cougars from scoring the whole night, allowing them to shoot 53.3 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from the 3-point line. Daysh pulled down 11 rebounds, seven of which were defensive, and managed to collect another double-double in the process. Erin Graham, junior of Deland, Florida, was not too far behind, collecting seven rebounds. The lack of defense and poor shooting made it nearly impossible for the Eagles to comeback and upset the Cougars as they eventually went on to lose.

In the second game of the weekend the Eagles hoped to salvage the weekend, needing a win against the Orediggers. The Eagles shooting woes continued when they shot under 30 percent from both the field and the 3-point line and managed to turn the ball over 21 times.

Daysh led the Eagles’ offensive attack when she scored 16 points on 6 of 17 from the field and 4 of 9 from the free-throw line. Graham scored 10 points on 3 of 12 from the field and 4 of 7 from the free-throw line. Chisom dished out four assists to her teammates while Graham added three.

Defensively, Daysh again led the Eagles in rebounding with a total of 16 rebounds, allowing her to collect her second double-double of the weekend. Also, she collected the Eagles’ only block of the game, hoping to spark them on the defensive end. Graham, however, came up big for the Eagles picking up two of the team’s four steals, which helped the team score 11 points off Orediggers’ turnovers.

In the end the Orediggers proved to be too much for the Eagles with their hot shooting and a good defensive effort helped them hold the lead for the whole game and cruise to the end.
