Eagles start season 2-2-1 in FL
The CSC softball team opened its season with two wins, two losses, and a tie. CSC dealt losses to Lynn University, Boca Raton, Florida, and Palm Beach Atlantic University, Palm Beach, Florida, but lost to Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, and Saint Leo University, Saint Leo, Florida. The game against Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, Florida, ended in a 3-3 tie, due to a rain delay.
“With the disadvantage of not having the field time that other teams have, we went out and played well,” Head Coach Robert Stack said. “Our pitching and defense was excellent. Last year we went 0-6 down there.”
Stack also said that the team hadn’t seen a lot of live pitching before the tournament.
Kinsley Mason, junior of Loveland, Colorado, pitched the last four innings against Saint Leo for the win.
Cierra Cosslett, senior pitcher, of Grand Junction, Colorado, pitched all eight innings in the win against Lynn University, giving up nine hits and four runs. The Eagles were down one run until the sixth inning, where Morgan Wilhelm, junior of Littleton, Colorado, tripled to centerfield, scoring junior Lindsey Karlin, of Berthoud, Colorado. In the top half of the eighth, Karlin hit a single to center, scoring Rebekah Anthony, senior of Monument Colorado, to take the lead, and seal the win for CSC.
In another extra-inning game, the Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to defeat Palm Beach Atlantic. Cosslett pitched a complete game, giving up eight hits, but only one run.
Alyssa Geist, freshman of Broomfield, Colorado, scored the first run for CSC on a throwing error from the Sailfish. Later in the inning, Bekka Prokaski, junior of Broomfield, Colorado, scored on a passed ball to win the game.
Mason also pitched the loss to Florida Tech, giving up seven hits and one run. The Eagles were only able to produce two hits. Cosslett pitched in the loss to Saint Leo, giving up four runs off seven hits. CSC was also able to manage seven hits, but only scored two runs.
“We need to focus on our offense,” Stack said. “There were several situations where we needed to get a bunt down and couldn’t get it. Our hitting was not as good as it needs to be. We need to win when our pitcher only gives up one run.”
Stack also said that Cosslett did a phenomenal job on the mound and was impressed with the performance of Mason as well.
The Eagles are on another long road trip this weekend, this time to Canyon, Texas, for the West Texas Invitiational.
