TBE directors present at Texas A&M

The Big Event is two months away from its fourth consecutive year at CSC, but the committee for this year’s The Big Event has been working since September 2015 to make sure things go smoothly.

One way the committee prepares is to travel to the annual One Big Thanks Conference at Texas A&M University, College Station. The conference is a way for colleges, universities, and high schools to collaborate ideas based on experiences they have had with former Big Events. The conference also provides panel discussions that discusses ways to fundraise, getting more student recruitment, ways to create volunteer job sites, and improvement opportunities for future Big Events.

The annual conference was started back in 2006. The Big Event was created in 1982 by Joe Nussbaum, former vice president of the Student Government Association at Texas A&M University.

CSC Assistant Professor of Communication and The Big Event Adviser Shaunda French brought The Big Event to CSC in spring 2013. The Big Event co-directors Jessica Orose, 21, senior of Piedmont, South Dakota; and Alyssa Sanders, 21, senior of Dalton, presented at this year’s conference with French. This year was French’s third year presenting on behalf of CSC.

“Chadron State’s Big Event has proven to be the most successful for schools under 10,000 students,” 2015 Texas A&M Big Event Director Kevin Brooks said. “You always know the presentation will be lively, informative, and well received by the audience.”

CSC was easily the smallest school at the conference in the college ranks. Other schools in attendance at the collegiate level were D-I schools. They included: Auburn University, Florida State University, Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State University, Stephen F. Austin University, Texas State University, and Virginia Tech University.

“It was a wonderful experience being at the conference,” O’Rose said. “It was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and I enjoyed every minute of it.”

CSC’s The Big Event will be at noon April 23 on Elliot Field following the spring football game.
