Beu expresses concern for future rave
Student Senate hosted an open forum Thursday for an allocation of no more than $5,275 for an Alice in Wonderland themed rave.
Student Affairs Senior Director Pat Beu expressed concerns regarding the wrong message that the word “rave” might send to students about drug use for the dance. The Mari Sandoz Center Museum Director Sarah Polak said that they are getting security so there are fewer problems but if students are going to show up under the influence, it is their choice. Beu replied with saying that there is a difference between students choosing to be under the influence and the institution putting a “stamp of approval on a rave.”
Sofia Trefilova, sophomore of Syktyvkar, Russia, said, “I feel like the rave is just a title.”
The rave, which will be the second back to school dance the Mari Sandoz Center has hosted, will be on Friday during the first week of school in the fall 2016 semester. Polak, Student Senate President Katrina Hurley, Senate Vice President Karson Langley, Senator At Large Stephanie Alfred, Beu, and one student attended the forum.
The following is the breakdown of costs for the rave: $75 to dress the muses, $30 for decorations for the Thomas Jefferson statue, $450 for three psychedelic Alice mushroom columns, $80 for a psychedelic Alice 3-D tea cup photo op, $1,000 for LED multi-color chasing rope lights with accessories, $175 for blacklight flexible ribbon 12-volt LED strip – 5 m, $500 for a disc jockey, $800 for printing and posters, $700 for prizes for costumes, $600 for refreshments from Dining Services, $600 for security, $180 for security shirts, and $85 for UV blacklight reactive blue invisible ink club kit.
Some costs may be lower than what is listed, such as the disc jockey and prizes. Many of these items can be reused in the future years.
Polak said she is budgeting more money for security because she wants to have more security personnel at the dance so there are less issues with drugs and alcohol and so nobody tries to break into the museum.
Polak contacted an artist for a piece of art, “Evening Alice,” for permission to use the artwork for posters.
Polak met with the Social Sciences club and plans to meet with Sigma Tau Delta and International clubs to help with the dance.
